The Story of Nellie's Threshold
72nd Annual San Antonio Art League Exhibition
Acrylic - 27 1/2 X 33 1/2
The story of my collage called Nellie's threshold came about when I took
photographs of an old door and entrance way to my grandmother's home.
She had artfully placed tiles around the threshold at her front door.
The tiles were at least four different colors and a variety of shapes.
As a child, my sisters and I played with our toy cars and made cities on the walkway
where the tiles lay. We made tracks and pretended the space between the tiles were roads.
Years later I took photographs of that door and was amazed at how well the tiles looked afters so much time. And,
I was glad my grandmother had put them there so long ago. I took snapshots of the old turquoise green door
and each tile as well as the ground around them. I left any reminants of leaves or dirt that may have been there.
After veiwing the photographs, I saw a collage in the making. I tore and cut the photos to arrange them in an
abstract manner. Afterward, I took one last photograph of the completed collage. While looking at the finished
design, my grandmother Nellie suggested I paint the design on canvas. I chose to paint in acrylic.
Many good memories are held behind this door and within this piece. With this I proudly present
"Nellie's Threshold"
